Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Sunday, October 13, 2019

Lesson: Jeremiah 25:1-14
Psalm: 90
Epistle: Ephesians 4:1-6
Gospel: Luke 14:1-15

ADORATION
Almighty God, from day to day You are my refuge, and from moment to moment You are my God. When I forget this truth, I am swept away like a dream and fade away suddenly like the grass. Without You, all my days are but labor and sorrow and come to an end like a sigh. Therefore You grant me a full lifespan to experience You. You teach me to number my days by seeking You through prayer, that I may apply my heart to the wisdom of Your Word. You satisfy me by Your loving-kindness in the morning, and I rejoice in Your Presence all the days of my life. You show me the splendor of Your works, that I may know Your grace. Your prosper the work of my hands, according to Your will.

CONFESSION
Holy and gracious Father, through the prophets You warned Your people Israel that if they did not turn from their wicked ways, You would allow Babylon to invade their land and uproot and enslave its inhabitants. I confess that I often ignore Your warnings in my mind and persist in my stubbornness, and thereby I consent to admit evil into my heart and uproot the virtues I seek to cultivate therein. I banish from my heart the sound of gladness, which is the worship of You; the voice of the Bridegroom, which is the call of Your Son; and the light of the lamp, which is the Presence of Your Spirit. I make the true potential of my heart into a ruin and a waste, making myself a slave to sin.

THANKSGIVING
Holy Spirit, I thank You for calling me to lead a life worthy of Your Presence, as imperfectly and waywardly as I may answer that call. I thank You for showing me that the way to that life is through humility and gentleness, through patience and love, but above all through unity and peace. You want us to be one body with each other, just as You are One Spirit, One with the Father and the Son in an eternal community of Love. Even when, in my failings, I cannot make every effort to maintain this unity and peace, and needful separation must occur, I thank You for reminding me that there is one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all, and so we are all Your children.

SUPPLICATION
Lord Jesus Christ, You healed the man swollen with dropsy. Whenever I swell with pride in my own identity or accomplishments, call me back to the practice of humility, for You are gentle and humble in heart. You taught guests humbly to wait for the host to seat them at the place of honor. Strengthen me always to wait upon You with patience and confidence, until You deem it right to move me up higher in contemplation and relationship with You. You taught hosts to invite those who cannot repay them. As You constantly knock on the door of my heart, inviting me to dine with You at Your heavenly banquet, teach me the depths of Your grace and Your love, for which I can never repay You.
